Carroburg Campaign Sessions 19: Death Twice

Session restarted on the morning of the 30th Sommerzeit.

Agneta is publicly hanged, to much acclaim. However, her commodity as a wizard actually results in a stooge being hanged in her place, and she is sold into slavery – or more accurately into the employ of Leif Aelfricsson. She is sent to the Priory at Struppel to rest and make good her new persona - Karelia von Schwerein. Whilst at the Priory, she discovers that the Prioress suffered an accident and there is a new Prioress from the Queen of the Wood sect.

Aldhelm continues his duality, establishing Beatrix in her own shop.

General news includes, another strike by the so-called Slaughterer, mysterious disappearances off the streets, large quantities of drugs flooding the streets and a Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice establishing a strong political presence as a result of much of this. Politics also rumbles on in the background, as business tries to recover.

You did some ‘easy’ work patrolling, especially given the existence of a Demon Prowler, Slaughterer and various reported ‘wild’ animals. Nothing came of your patrols.

However, you became embroiled in investigating the death of Eberitter Ruprecht Edel, found dead in the basement of his new house. This proved to be a quite complex case, involving a wife and a second wife (both legal), Bretonnians, smuggling and a ‘friendly society’ known as the Kern Lodge. The culprit was Marcel Marchand. He was married to Claudette Marchand, also married to Edel. Edel was infatuated with her, she seems to have been after his wealth. A complex legal case seems likely, but you (well, Aldhelm) have been offered 60GCs to assassinate Claudette by Anna Edel, Ruprecht’s daughter. You guess that the motive for the murder was jealousy, that Marcel was not prepared to share his wife.

At the back of the case, was also the shadowy ascetic Procopius (an adviser to the Grand Duke), an odd companion to the libertine Edel. Amongst papers, you also found reference to Naturis Profundi, the Great Druid Malthus and the shrine under the city. Edel was living with Claudette in the “Green House”, which had many Old Faith sigils carved into woodwork and figures of a fat jovial bearded man carrying a large sack. Marcel is staying at the Kern Lodge, across the river, and you visited there too. He has a personal bodyguard too, and he looks quite hard.

Agneta was due to report to Aelfricsson upon these findings.
