Carroburg Campaign Session 08

Johan’s new arm was functional, but apparently the Kwartz offices dealing with gnome imports of functioning arms were unable to arrange a fitting "due to work commitments". You did find out that there are two mercenaries in the city with gnome arms. One was Ursula Kopenfeld of the Wolf Pack Company.

Down in the tunnels, you found dirt, grime and smells. You also found giant rats, beastmen-rats and humans working with them. In a piece of masterful strategy, Agneta knocked over Johan, who again took a beating. You retreated, though did recognise one man as the guy who chopped off Johan’s arm. Johan seems to have suffered more damage than a small army.

Master Hertwig invited the party to a lecture by Augusto Roggin to the Fellowship of the Turned Page and The Ancient Duties of the Natural Order based on his forthcoming book. Aldhelm and Johan were not-politely told to leave for getting drunk, and the group singularly failed to impress anyone - especially Herzog Siegfried’s son.

You were approached by Councillor Marcuse about a possible job, collecting evidence to help him pursue a number of cases against Dritte Ward’s Ulrican priest and his activities. You decided to accept because, on balance, you reckoned the Cult couldn’t dislike you much more. You spent 10 days collecting evidence.

Whilst collecting the evidence you had run-ins with some Ulricans (nothing serious) and some nobles (you behaved rather well), neither liking your tasks.

You also resolved an affair at the Shallyan Leper Hospital. Finding three Shallyan 'initiates' beating up a fourth, you elected not to "mind your own business" - though you were shocked when they drew weapons. However, they did not stand and fight. You discovered the fourth was no other than poor Ludmilla Merkel (nee Meissen). “Doing her bit” for the cult, she had discovered that the hospital, which is actually now a shelter for reformed prostitutes, was operating a brothel out the back. This was being done without the knowledge of very infirm Goody Zweishcuh, who nominally ran the hospital. You revealed the truth to her, and the three left. The brothel was very perverted, and you discovered a dying Inge van der Kirkoff there, who had been sold to the renegade Sisters by Jan de Witts. She could tell you very little, admitting that she had been a simple courier for assorted Marienburg smugglers.

Aldhelm offered to help out at the hospital, but seemed more interested in learning the surgery skill than being selflessly useful.

You later attended the Annual Ward Court Session at which the case was heard. Marcuse won his case, though it will progress up the legal chain. You received a bonus.

The Ward’s guilds also lodged a complaint against Ritter Udo von Nie for breach of trading charters, which was then quashed by the attending Chancellor’s Under-Secretary who presented a licence requiring this to be heard by the Grand Duke’s Electoral Magistrate. You had met von Nie in carrying out your work for Marcuse, and been chased off ‘his lands’. Johannes also knew that he was a direct vassal of the Grand Duke.

Two further points at court were noted. The annual session ratifies both Electoral and Imperial laws. The Emperor has decreed that mutanys are not to be killed as of right, whilst both the ward and the grand Duke ratified the slaying of all mutants. Where this left the issue you were unsure, but Johannes’ neighbour - and what better expert than they guy sitting next to you - said that as the Duke was nearer that would do for him.

Hans Pflaum seems to have disappeared, though a visit from the Ducal Police, a new force of Wolf Pack Mercenaries and a very scary Wilhelmina De Roos, searching for 'Johan Schmidt' left the GM amazed at players’ actions once again. When a bunch of secret police, being very scary turn up looking for you, perhaps the best thing is not to volunteer your surrender?

A mate of Grombur’s told you that a really evil-looking dwarf has been asking after him at the Docks.

You also heard stories of unrest between guild-orientated Topknot Club members versus the noble Moustache Movement.

We are effectively at the morning of the 10th Sigmarzeit, known locally as Kaiserzeit. We can catch up with any back administration prior to starting. I think it would also be useful to try and agree on whether you are returning to the tunnels prior to the start of the session.

Johan has 2GCs salary.
