Carroburg Campaign Session 07
You collected your back-pay. Pieter gets 60/-. These were new silver coins, the obverse bearing the very odd wording "A New Hope".
The session was a mixture of individuals going about their business and the group keeping in touch, and ultimately becoming embroiled in a rather odd business.
You were contacted by a man working for the Defenders. He warned you to leave the city, which you discussed at length. More immediately, he told you that Hans had sold you out to the defenders (for 30GCs) and then reneged on the deal. However, he had been responsible for poisoning you in Felsenheim and certain other acts. This also caused much discussion. He was going to ‘deal with’ Hans, and was prepared to leave you alone - if you didn’t interfere. Hans is currently missing.
Johann returned to find his family in hock for 120/- to Bad Anhilda. Ursula had also gone, apparently having moved beyond Urgel von Snobbislakt. Heidi had been left alone. Johann came to an agreement where he paid off half the debt and agreed to appear at the Carroburg Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) - a fight club. A pit and associated rooms had been cut down into the Schlaefanstieg. He did very well, receiving some help from a Gipsy girl, "Don’t drink the water". He slew a "templar" sporting a tattoo with a letter "D" hanging out of its maw in a four-way match, and killed the three make-weights too. One was killed pleading for his life, on bended knee. The crowd loved it, and he won 10GCs. The rest was very peculiar. First, a physician “attended” to Johan and removed various fluids etc. This was not normal. Second, he was offered payment to engage in various "activities" (shall we say) with the four owners of the club, so that they might absorb his "winning miasma". For this he was given the belongings of the ‘templar’. These included chainmail and a permit to wear it, signed by Ar-Ulric: To "Willi Gruyden, retainer of Ritter Walter von Blomberg". There was also a pair of boots (very well worn, a sword and a pouch of 8 teeth. Of the four, one (an older woman) seemed especially wealthy, and she had a broach representing the Tanners’ Guild. The chainmail had a poorly altered Middenheim garrison armourer’s mark upon it, forged into Ulrican noble Walter von Blomberg’s. And you know him!
Johann managed to get his sister (who whilst only 10, has a Fel of 37) into Ritter Fulk von Deiber’s household - the party have helped him twice now. He could find no trace of his other sister - but hasn’t really the right contacts. Whilst she could not help him on this matter, he also ‘visited’ Rita Manstein for a night or two.
Both wizards conversed with their Masters over various issues. Johannes, having been placed in a supervisory role over Agneta, didn’t sugar coat the bit to follow, but Agneta also had her own discussions with her Master. Johannes was granted his full title, and granted a permit to practice magic - though he did not actually look at it. Hint hint!!
Aldhelm visited Hugo, who explained that he had been ‘advised’ to leave the city. He also told Aldhelm that the ‘perfume’ from weeks ago was, in fact, an elven concoction used by their ships. It ignites on contact with water and burns very effectively. This led to speculation as to what it might be doing in Carroburg, a city on a river, with trading ships as its lifeblood and atop a high water table and with springs running through its centre.
Two different threads led you to the cellar of a house in Schlaefanstieg. Master Dietrich had a small dagger, bought from a peddlar who was hawking one or two nice archaeological specimens. It seems very old, non-human with (elven) sigils. He wanted to know where it came from, but the peddlar claimed to have bought it through a trader. Who is now missing. Carlinda Klessholt. It turned out that she was last seen visiting Old Man Gunther Rhedden. He is arguably the most respected (at least legal) apothecary. Aldhelm discovered that he was running down his business, which was very odd. He was very brusque, with a new apprentice too. After some investigation, it was decided to visit the house. The usual amount of discussion took place over various plans, leading to Aldhelm ignoring all these and barging into the house, where he found the maid that he had been talking to a prisoner of an armed man - who shut the door behind Aldhelm. Our heroes carried on as they normally do, according to their abilities and motivation. Johannes heroically went head-to-head with a tough, ultimately chasing him into the house, down the stairs and forcing three to flee (through a hole in the cellar wall). We might add that the local private Watch had (noisily and slowly) turned up by this point, but that would simply spoil a heroic tale. Johan lost an arm and bled to death so heroically that he survived, in no small part to Aldhelm. Agneta ran away "to call for the Watch". And, no, no-one at the session believed her either.
It turned out that Gunther had found some ancient refuse site, and dug it out. He had found some interesting relics, which he had sold through his contacts (specifically Carlinda). However, he had broken through into some sort of tunnel system - supposedly not there. And a number of men had broken into his house one night, and captured everyone. He was told to act ‘normally’ or his household would all be killed. You saved everyone, and were given a number of rewards. These may also be more useful contacts in future.
The Rechengild (Rat Catchers) were employed to clean out the passages, but they found them blocked, and fully sealed them in. You were a bit doubtful, since the thugs had escaped that way. Further investigation found reference to springs and bournes that feed into the water channels that help keep the city clean. Were these tunnels linked to that? You were considereing where else these tunnels might appear - remember Xarroburg has a very high water table. Johann remembered the dug out pit at CADS, and they were happy to see him again. He is very good for business! Moreso, now with only one arm. He was offered a fight with five naked "Amazons".
It turned out that they had discovered a tunnel, and lost two people investigating it. You were hired to follow up for the sum of 2GCs - with a 3GC bonus for anyone willing to share their victorious miasma on completion. We ended the session with you preparing to go down this rather cramped tunnel. It is the morning of the 30th.
